Oflag IVC 1939-45

1939-1945 - Oflag IVC Allied Officer Prisoner of War Camp 31st October 1939 General Wolff of 4 Military District hired it on instruction from Military High Command in Berlin. Colditz Town is in Army Area Group C.

Transit Camp

October 31st 1939. Received prisoners from Polish Campaign. In 1940 a few Belgians.

Straflager

Punishment Camp. November 1940 Received Spangenberg 3 (RAF), Laufen 6 (Army) escapees. Followed by other escapees and prisoners that were difficult to handle and classified ‘anti-German’. Saw up to 1,000 British, Poles, French, Dutch and Belgians as ‘residents’.

Sonderlager

Special Camp. 1943. 2-300 mainly British POWs remained and received prisoners under sentence of death (Czechs etc), political prisoners and hostages for Hitler (Prominente).

Liberation

April 16th 1945. Prominente removed at 0130 on Friday 13th. Battle began by US 273rd Infantry on 15th April.
